Bond Yields Rise on Bets of Higher Interest Rates
Government bond yields around the world marched higher as investors anticipate that interest rates will remain elevated due to persistent high inflation, particularly in core indicators. Both the Reserve Bank of Australia and the Bank of Canada surprised with a 25bps interest rate increase this week, resuming their rate hike campaigns after a pause in the previous meeting. Traders are currently assigning a 63% chance the Fed will keep interest rates steady next week, while approximately 37% anticipate a 25bps rate hike. The ECB will also decide on monetary policy next week and comments from several officials suggest borrowing costs will continue to increase. The yield on the US 10-year Treasury note, often viewed as a benchmark for global borrowing costs, has risen to 3.8%, approaching levels not seen in three months. The Germany's 10-year Bund yield, the benchmark for Europe, has climbed above 2.47% and the yield on Australia's ten-year bond has surpassed 4%.
